Prof. Ravindra D. Kulkarni, holding 32 years of rich experience in the field of Chemical Technology, is currently the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mumbai (UoM). Before joining as Vice-Chancellor, he served as Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Mumbai; Head and Sr. Professor at the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Matunga, Mumbai, and Professor and Director at UICT, North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon (MS). His Research statistics covers Ph.D. guidance (18 Ph.D. awards, 2 PDF, 64 M Tech), PEER Reviewed publications (86 with Cumulative I.F: 220), Patents (3 granted+6 Filed/ Published), 06 Book Chapters, R & D Projects (16 DST SERB, AICTE, RUSA, DRDO-BARNS, UGC projects, Rs. 2.15 crore), consultancy assignments for renowned industries in India and Abroad (10 Projects, Rs. 64.22 lakh) and Infrastructure Projects (DST -FIST, UGC SAP, MODROB, TEQIP-II Rs.18.0 crore).

  • Research fields include: renewable polymers, nanopigments, green functional paints; oleochemicals; surfactants; biolubricants. 

  • Ph.D. supervision: 18 awarded; plus guiding MTech students (64) etc. 

  • Peer-reviewed publications: 80+ international journal articles; overall ~86 publications with a cumulative impact factor of ~220. 

  • Patents: several patents filed & granted (3 granted + 6 filed/published per one source) 

  • Major R&D projects: ~16 projects from agencies like DST, SERB, AICTE, etc., with funding in the order of Rs. 2.15 crore

Key Contributions & Leadership

  • Led the NAAC Cycle III assessment and reaccreditation of University of Mumbai to A++ grade with a CGPA of 3.65 in 2021. 

  • Under his tenure, the University of Mumbai obtained Category-I University status by UGC in 2023.

  • In QS Rankings 2025, University of Mumbai placed in the 711-750 band globally; 19th in India & 67th in Asia.

  • He chaired the Committee for designing the 4-year multidisciplinary degree programme in Maharashtra in line with NEP-2020.

  • Member of Maharashtra State NEP Implementation Steering Committee; involved in academic reforms like LOCF, OJT, blended learning, assessment reforms etc. 

Vision & Goals as VC

  • Plans to draft an AI policy for University of Mumbai, including its use in teaching-learning, assessment, handling of academic integrity / plagiarism, etc. 

  • Strengthening industry-academia linkages, especially in era of Industry 4.0.

  • Raising funds via CSR for developing university infrastructure.
